Peter explains our call to follow our Lord Jesus Christ, who, in his suffering, left us an example that we might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, uttered no deceit, and never reviled in return for wrongdoing. Rather, he entrusted himself to the Father who judges justly. He bore in his body our sins on the tree, in order that we now might die to sin and live to righteousness, and we are healed by his wounds. Though in times past we were going astray, wandering without guidance or aid, now we have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls.

One way that we commonly refer to those apart from Christ is “the lost.” The image of lostness derives directly from the metaphor Peter employs here. We have wandered off and have no way back. Jesus himself said that he would come find us and bring us back.

Shepherd and overseer of our souls, wherever you lead us we will follow.

Abraham was a man of faith. His faith produced obedience, and his obedience exemplified honest worship. Our worship, too, must be driven by obedience and faith, because faith that is drawn out of a heart of worship will always pass the test – no matter how difficult.
