Peter explains our call to follow our Lord Jesus Christ, who, in his suffering, left us an example that we might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, uttered no deceit, and never reviled in return for wrongdoing. Rather, he entrusted himself to the Father who judges justly. He bore in his body our sins on the tree, in order that we now might die to sin and live to righteousness, and we are healed by his wounds. Though in times past we were going astray, wandering without guidance or aid, now we have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls.

In describing Jesus’s suffering and death, Peter quotes directly from Isaiah 53.6-7. He is identifying Jesus as the Suffering Servant who would bear our sin and die in our place.

Lord Jesus, suffering servant of God, we praise you for dying in our place.

Abraham was a man of faith. His faith produced obedience, and his obedience exemplified honest worship. Our worship, too, must be driven by obedience and faith, because faith that is drawn out of a heart of worship will always pass the test – no matter how difficult.
