We discipline ourselves for godliness. We have been redeemed by God that we might live a life worthy of God and our Lord Jesus Christ, to live a life of excellence, to possess a compelling testimony to the truth and person of Christ and his Kingdom. We pursue a life of dedication, discipline, and sacrifice based on the truth of God’s Word in Christ and in Scripture, where one’s life is lived in a manner worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, for the purpose of demonstrating Christlike character in the roles, relationships, and responsibilities that God provides, done for the glory of God.
In a time when we can carry a Bible in our hand or on our phone, Paul’s emphasis on the public reading of Scripture may sound odd. In his time, there was no real private reading of Scripture. However, I believe that this command of Paul’s still stands for us today. Listening to Scripture as a part of a body in fellowship is still a powerful way that the Spirit of God transforms us.
Our Father, let us attend carefully to your word, not only in private but together. We trust that nothing you have said will return void.
