Week 31: Wednesday

The Kingdom of God is God’s sovereign intent to re-establish his rule and authority in this world, and to do so through the redemptive work of his Son, Jesus of Nazareth. This effort to “make things new” again is the core biblical teaching of Jesus and the ultimate point of reference on the meaning of life, under God’s rule. The Kingdom Story was the heart of Jesus’s teaching, and is the central focus of biblical theology. Truly, the story of Scripture, and of all creation, is the victory of God’s Kingdom through Jesus Christ.

God has involved us in his story by giving us citizenship in his Kingdom. The only proper response for humanity is humility. “The strong man” held us captive through sin and death, leaving us helpless and hopeless. Christ came, bound the strong man, and set us free. We are a part of God’s great kingdom story, but at no point are we the main characters. Let us be content with our part, and refuse prideful, self-centered narratives.

Humble us, our Lord, we pray, with a clear and honest vision of who we are in your great story. Teach us to honor Christ as King.
